OGB: Days Ten, Eleven, Twelve

Three more days; three more good deeds:

  • On Saturday, I went out for brunch for the first time in 2 years or so. As I was eating, I noticed an older woman sitting by herself who looked happier than most people in the restaurant. She smiled at everyone that walked by, she ate quietly with a smile on her face, she even said Grace before beginning her meal. By the end of my meal, I knew that the day’s good deed would be to pick up her check as well as the one for my boyfriend & I. Luckily, we had the same waitress, so I just asked her to bring me the woman’s check. As we were getting up to leave, the waitress must have told the woman because she smiled the biggest smile of the morning and told me, “God Bless you!”  $14 well spent!
  • On Sunday, I ran 9 miles with a good friend. During our run, she began talking about finances and mentioned needing to understand more about retirement options and saving; she then began asking my questions about how I set my budget, etc. I spent the next hour laying out some ideas with her and talking about ways she can work her budget to accommodate retirement savings AND student loan payoff. While this is an unconventional way to “give back,” I think the ultimate benefit would be for that conversation (and subsequent emails with links, etc.) to be a catalyst for a solid financial foundation for my friend.
  • Yesterday I decided to write gratitude cards to my family and friends instead of sending Christmas cards this year. In each card, I shared a funny story/anecdote as well as reasons why I’m thankful to have that person in my life. This may be something I start doing in future years as it’s much more personal and unexpected given the timing of the year.
